1. Extended Deadline for Charitable Donations
Due to the Canada Post mail strike, donations made between January 1 and February 28, 2025, can be claimed on your 2024 tax return. Don’t forget to include these receipts when gathering your tax documents. More information can be found here.
2. CRA Moves to Online Notices for Businesses
Starting this spring, CRA will stop sending paper mail to businesses. All correspondence—Notices of Assessment, appeals, and more—will be available only through My Business Account. Make sure you have access and that your email is up to date. If you disagree with a CRA notice, you only have 90 days to appeal from the date it’s posted to your account, so keeping your information current is key. Learn more about this change here.
3. New Alberta Moving Bonus for Tradespeople
If you moved to Alberta between May 1 and December 31, 2024, and work in trades like construction or mechanics, you may qualify for the Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus—a one-time, refundable tax credit of up to $5,000. Applications open May 1, 2025, and are limited to the first 2,000 applicants. To apply, you’ll need to have filed your 2024 personal taxes, declared Alberta residency, and received your Notice of Assessment. Be sure to set up your Alberta.ca account early to be ready when applications open. More details are available here.
Quick Reminder: Personal tax returns are due April 30. Filing on time ensures you continue receiving the federal benefits you’re entitled to.
